Green Initiatives at Fire on the Water

Out There Arts recognises we are facing a global climate emergency. We are putting measures in place to help us be more environmentally responsible across all aspects of our organisations and the events we deliver.

We have created an environmental plan in collaboration with our partners to help offset our carbon footprint at Fire on the Water: Beach Edition this year, and work towards achieving a net zero event.

  • Mindful of the impact on the environment in regard to the use of fossil fuels for Fire on the Water: Beach Edition’s fire displays, we are mitigating the event’s carbon consumption with a recognised carbon offset scheme which supports both local, UK, and international tree planting. This year we are using Carbon Footprint’s UK Tree Planting scheme. The scheme supports the planting of trees in the East of England, mainly in school locations. You can read more about the scheme here: https://www.carbonfootprint.com/plantingtrees.html The amount of trees planted will offset the event’s carbon emissions by 200%.
  • We are also exploring carbon insetting by attributing a portion of the budget into investing into renewable infrastructure.
  • We’ll be evaluating our visitors travel and helping offset those emissions
  • We have formulated a Sustainable Trading Standards for all stallholders
  • We have also ensured the firewood used is from sustainable sources and Woodsure Plus Certified. The Charcoal is from Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, and created using sustainable forestry management practices.
  • For our printed material, we use a local provider, Blackwell Print who offset our printing by planting trees.

Council leader Carl Smith comments:

“Fire On The Water was a fantastic event last year, bringing thousands of people to the town, and we are delighted to be working with Out There Arts to bring it back to Great Yarmouth seafront this autumn with a new beach edition on our famous golden sands.

As a Borough Council we are very conscious of our responsibility to the environment, both to plants and wildlife locally and more generally to the global climate. As last year Out There Arts will carefully plan the event to ensure that impact is minimised and our unique surroundings are protected. This includes using local and where possible, renewable sources of energy, and mitigating the event’s carbon footprint through a carbon offset scheme. We are also conscious that given the popularity of the event, there needs to be access for all in this beach location. Out There Arts is preparing a full access plan so everyone can enjoy the Fire on the Water experience.

We look forward to once again welcoming people to Great Yarmouth for this fantastic creative and imaginative spectacle. It is a unique, family-friendly event and one not to be missed.”
